Joe Walton has always emphasized that football has three phases (offense, defense, special teams), and that no one phase is more important than the other.

It's an emphasis that has prompted some eyerolling over the course of Walton's years at Robert Morris, but any Robert Morris fan or player who has watched the Colonials for some time knows how true it is. The Colonials have lost crucial games because of poor special teams play, and they've won because of exemplary performances in special teams.

It's why RMU has a long history of top returners, and why RMU has had a host of quality kickers and punters. An afterthought at other schools, it's a focal point at Robert Morris.
