RMU trying to find depth, experience in secondary
There were many reasons why the Robert Morris Colonials claimed their first Northeast Conference title in ten years back in 2010.
One of the ones that might have been overlooked behind the star play of all-time leading rusher Myles Russ and dynamic linebackers like Alex DiMichele and Elias Navarro was the cohesive unit in the secondary.
Senior safeties Mike Landers and Mike Richards combined with senior corners Rolf Bathold and Marvin McCalla to give Robert Morris four steady, experienced, versatile defensive backs.
It's no surprise the Colonials missed that foursome en route to a program worst 2-9 record a year after losing those players to graduation.
"We lost a lot of cohesiveness from the year previous to that. It's not often that you have four players who've played as many games as the kids played in 2010," secondary coach Bill Hurley said. "Maybe as a coaching staff, we kind of didn't realize that right off the bat. We knew we were going to be young, but there was a big drop off in terms of cohesiveness."
