Andersons 24 pushes RMU to win

Something about the Sewall Center seems to agree with Karvel Anderson.
The Robert Morris sharpshooter tied his own Sewall Center record with eight 3-pointers, and RMU needed each and every one as the Colonials held off Texas-Arlington 88-81 as part of the Keightley Classic.
Anderson was 8-of-11 from the field, including 8-of-10 from 3-point range, with six of his three-pointers coming in the first half. He finished with a season-high 24 points.
"I've been putting a lot of extra work in, getting a lot of extra shots up," Anderson said. "My wrist is feeling good, and sometimes you can't really take credit for anything. It was just one of those nights."
Anderson had those 24 points on just 11 total shots, and his teammates felt he could have hunted even more if he wanted to.
"Even if he wanted to shoot 20 shots a night, he still looks for his team," Lucky Jonessaid. "I think that's the best part about him. He's unselfish and he can get his at the same time."
Robert Morris needed Anderson's hot night against one of the most productive offenses in the nation, a Mavericks squad putting up close to 90 points per game. Behind Anderson, RMU took a 41-31 lead at the half, but that's when UTA's offense came to life. Leading scorer Reger Dowell scored 21 of his 26 points in the second half, and UTA climbed back into the game at several points.
"We definitely find ways to make it interesting, but I think there will be times this year where we'll be having guys in situations they haven't been in before," head coach Andrew Toole said.
The first point was with five minutes left in the second half, as Dowell hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 47-45. Robert Morris sped back in front and held the Mavericks at bay until Dowell hit back-to-back 3-pointers again to tie it at 67 with 6:16 to go.
The Colonials worked most of the second half with Mike McFadden and Stephan Hawkins in foul trouble, and once McFadden fouled out with 2:57 to go, Toole leaned on Desjuan Newton and Jeremiah Worthem for big minutes down the stretch.
"With all the ball screens they set, they're not a team that pounds the ball into the post. I thought we could go smaller and really defend that 3-point line - or try to defend that 3-point line and dribble penetration," Toole said. "We just felt they were the right people at the right time."
Robert Morris was able to clamp down again and finally pull away thanks to some extra effort plays down the stretch. With RMU up 77-75 and 2:11 left, Newton stopped a fastbreak lay-up off a turnover on one end and then recovered at the other end to score on a loose ball.
"There's always something else you can do to try to help your team," Toole said. "Obviously we don't want to turn it over, but we did. What can we do next to help our team? Sprint back and defend and maybe make it a little difficult. A lot of teams would just stop and give that guy a breakaway layup."
That prompted Texas-Arlington to start fouling, and the Mavericks had done their scouting report. They fouled Anthony Myers-Pate, who had been struggling with his shot. Myers-Pate came through, hitting all six of his free throws to help RMU pull out the win. Myers-Pate finished with a season-high 10 points and nine assists.
"My job is to keep my team happy. That's what I'm out here for, to make everybody else happy and make everybody else successful," Myers-Pate said. "If they're successful, I'm successful."
Robert Morris also got Jones' best statistical game of the season, as the junior wing provided 15 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.
"I'm still not playing at the level I really want to play at," Jones said. "A lot of my teammates are telling to keep staying aggressive and I was very aggressive tonight even though I missed eight shots."
RMU can come out of the Keightley Classic with a split when it tries to grab a win at Cleveland State on Saturday.
