RMU picks up second win of the season, beating Lehigh 69-67
The Robert Morris Colonials picked up win number two of their 2015-2016 campaign Thursday night, after beating Lehigh by a score of 69-67 at the Sewall Center. The game started out with the teams going back-and-forth with the game tied up at 12 with 12:11 left in the first half. RMU then went on a 14-4 run over the next four minutes to take a 26-16 lead at the 8:00 minute mark. Lehigh then chipped away at the Colonials lead and, after an Austin Price buzzer-beating three pointer, trailed RMU 36-34 at the midway point of the game.
At the 16:01 mark, Lehigh tied the game up at 41 apiece, after Kahron Ross three ball. RMU would then start to pull away again, regaining the lead and pushing it to 10, after a Matty McConnell three. Just like the first half, Lehigh would then chip away at the Colonials lead, until eventually tying up the game at 67 with just 1:26 left. Kavon Stewart would then hit a driving layup with 1:08 left in the game, which would end up being the game winning bucket for the Colonials. Lehigh did have a chance to tie the game up after Elijah Minnie missed a three with 12 seconds left, but Kahron Ross got called for a travel with 4 seconds left to seal the game for RMU.
Rodney Pryor led the Colonials in points, rebounds and assists, going for 20 points, 6 rebounds and 5 assists. He did, however, turn the ball over 5 times on the night. Pryor shot 8-of-14 from the field and 2-of-6 from three for the game.
Matty McConnell also had a strong outing, scoring 13 points while shooting 4-of-8 from the field, including 3-of-7 from three. He also grabbed 2 rebounds and dished out 2 assists. Kavon Stewart also finished in double figures, scoring 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting and making his only three point attempt of the night to go along with 4 assists. He also turned the ball over 4 times.
Elijah Minnie, who was in some foul trouble during the game after picking up 2 fouls in the first 7 minutes and another one early on in the second half, put up 9 points and 4 rebounds and shot 4-of-8 from the field. Isaiah Still and Billy Giles both pitched in 6 points each. Still added in 3 rebounds and 2 assists and shot 2-of-5 from the field, including 2-of-3 from three. Giles also put up 2 rebounds, 2 blocks and 2 steals and shot 3-of-5 from the field.
Steven Whitley finished the night with 2 points, 2 rebounds and 2 assists in his 16 minutes of play and Andre Frederick scored 2 points, grabbed 1 board and blocked 1 shot in 17 minutes.
As a team, RMU had what was probably their best all-around shooting performances this season, shooting 53.1 percent from the field, 45.0 percent from three and 72.7 percent from the foul line. They grabbed 23 rebounds and had 15 assists as well as 15 turnovers. They also forced 18 turnovers, getting 7 steals, and blocked 4 shots.
Lehigh was led by Austin Price, who scored 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting to go along with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Kahron Ross and Jesse Chuku also finished the game in double figures, scoring 14 points each. Ross also pitched in 3 rebounds and 2 assists and shot 6-of-9 from the field and went 2-of-3 from three. Chuku grabbed 6 rebounds and dished out 2 assists and shot 6-of-12 from the field. Kyle Leufroy finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds and Justin Goldsborough finished with 7 points and a team-high 7 rebounds.
As a team, Lehigh shot 48.3 percent from the field, 28.6 percent from three and went 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) from the free throw line. The Mountain Hawks grabbed 34 rebounds and had 13 assists and 18 turnovers. They also had 9 steals and 3 blocks.
Overall, it's nice to see RMU get another tally in the win column this season. This was a much needed win for the Colonials to get some confidence heading into conference play, which starts in just over 3 weeks. The Colonials are back in action Saturday at 2:00 against hometown rival Duquesne, as Robert Morris looks to make it five years in a row they defeat the Dukes and pick up their third win of the season.
