Next season, the Colonials will beef up the guard position by adding 6’3” Lorenzen Wright Jr.

Wright, a defensive-minded guard who can shoot the long ball, said he is really excited to play at Robert Morris. “My main reason for picking this program is because of the opportunity at hand. I know I can thrive in coach Toole’s system,” Wright said.

Lorenzen also mentioned his liking for the city of Pittsburgh, which was a plus when it came to making his decision.

Wright had some high praise for head coach Andy Toole. “Coach Toole is a wonderful coach who knows what he is doing. He has a nice coaching staff behind him. I’m ready to make my mark in the conference,” he said.

In addition to Robert Morris, Wright Jr. had offers from Cal State, TSU, NC Central and Norfolk State.

During his senior year of high school, Wright averaged about 16 points and 5 rebounds per game. Currently, he plays for Southwest Tennessee in the NJCAA. Wright has averaged 9.6 points points per game, while playing in 33 games this season, including 28 starts.

From speaking to Wright, you could tell that he takes a lot of pride in playing defense, something that a lot of players did not do this past year.

“I love the 2-3 zone. I would like to see the way coach Toole runs it. I am a defensive player so I think I should be a great addition to the team. Defense is the key to winning games,” Wright said confidently.

The journey hasn’t always been easy for Wright, who dealt with adversity throughout his childhood. “I just didn’t have the work ethic until later on in life. Now, I have a lot of confidence in myself,” Wright said.

That confidence wasn’t always there, however. One person that helped him grow on and off the court was his father. “He was my role model,” Wright stated.

Lorenzen Wright Sr. played in the NBA for ten seasons and was the seventh overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft. “He taught me pretty much everything I know. My passion for the game came at a young age,” Wright added.

Basketball runs in his family and Lorenzen couldn’t be more excited to begin the next chapter in his life with the Robert Morris Colonials.
